Plastic Age
Netherlands / 2017-present / sculptural objects / plastic household utensils / variable dimensions
Plastic Age consists of plastic household products from various countries, including Indonesia, Colombia, Uganda, Azerbaijan, Palestine, Cuba and Serbia. All items were collected during my travels and have been brought to the Netherlands by myself. The size of the installation depends on the space in which it is exhibited. The work stems from my love-hate relationship with plastic. I love the colourful household products that can be bought all over the world (the collection of objects started in 2003 as a private collection); On the other hand, I am averse to single use plastics such as straws, bags and packaging that are carelessly produced, used and thrown away anywhere. The limit has been reached.
Plastic Age works like a mirror and makes people think about the plastic problem. I noticed this while exhibiting the site-specific work of 665 cm at BIG ART 2020, curated by Anne van der Zwaag, on the Hembrug site in Zaandam. In 2018-2019 I showed three towers of approx. 150 cm at Bellamy Kabinet in Amsterdam-West, curated by Lidewij Sloot and Sofie Rouw. In 2017 I developed the prototypes during a short five-day residency at De Torenkamer in Amsterdam.
