Pabrik Gula (Sugar Factory)

Pabrik Gula is a series of 38 slides of workers of a present-day sugar factory in Yogyakarta, Indonesia: Pabrik Gula Madukismo. The factory was established in 1958. In the presentation the close up portraits of the workers and still lives of contemporary industrial production of sugar are accompanied with a soundscape based on original factory sounds. The soundscape was designed together with sound artist Charly van Rest / Silent M Studio in Rotterdam.
Pabrik Gula as well as the installation mijn-dijn were realised for the exhibition Oét d'r Sjtub (Out of the Dust), a group show with works by melanie bonajo, Roger Cremers, Chaim van Luit, Danae Moons, Sandro Setola, Su Tomesen, curated by Lene ter Haar at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis, Heerlen, March 6 till June 7, 2015. The exhibition focused on mining past of South Limburg and its exploitation by the Dutch government.
Pabrik Gula was further exhibited at Sukru Sani (Candy), curated by Dimitri Madimin at the Amsterdam City Archives (Stadsarchief) during Museumnacht 2017.
